Hi Friends on Facebook and Friends in Life,

Over the weekend I saw XXL’s 2011 Freshman Class magazine cover. Wherein the magazine selects the hottest up and coming MCs of the year. Usually they choose 10 rappers but this year they decided to select 11. Of the 11 rappers there are ZERO female rappers. That’s right zero, nada, zilch!

From left to right we have: Lil Twist, CyHi Da Prynce, Big K.R.I.T., Meek Mill, Diggy Simmons, Kendrick Lamar, Yelawolf, Fred The Godson, Mac Miller, YG and Lil B. Cover hits stands next month.  

Before I explain why I’m steamed let me just make it very clear that I am NOT a man hater, O-K. Moving on…it pisses me off that a hip-hop magazine with funding out the ying yang can’t go out and find the next greatest female rapper.  Seriously what is up with that?!?  Shouldn’t it be in their best interest?  If I was the editor of a major hip-hop magazine I would get pretty fucking bored of only showcasing male rappers. Aren’t females the main subject of most rap songs?  What does a woman have to do to get some shine?!  Does she need to look a certain way?  Dress a certain way?  Rap about a certain topic?  Why isn’t there a female Wu-Tang Clan?!?!  Grrrrrrr!  This isn’t an attack on XXL because there are plenty of other hip-hop magazines and frankly all of us need to do better when it comes to recognizing female rappers.  I’m not going to play the blame game because there are way too many wack reasons why female MCs don’t get as much love in the music industry.  I understand that as a fan of hip-hop I’m just as much a part of the problem and I’m only venting because I’m preparing to become a part of the solution.  First I get angry, then I become obsessed and then I get proactive, those are my steps to creating change.  Right now I’m in the angry/fed up stage so please bare with me.  

The Freshman cover of XXL was a great wake up call and reminder of my only beef with hip-hop and it’s a high time we begin the movement to recognize more female MCs. So without further adieu I’m going to begin my hunt for the next greatest female rappers plural, NOT singular PLURAL, more than ONE!
