The Perfect Lunchtime Read - My Brand New Friend

Hi Friends on Facebook and Friends in Life,

For today’s entry I attempted to write a (light) poem for my brand new friend Fatou.

FYI: I’m not a poet by ANY means!  I actually can’t remember the last time I wrote a poem.  Seriously I’ve avoided it my entire life.

When I was in elementary school I used Tupac’s lyrics to write haikus and similes; I would rearrange and exchange the words so that it looked like it was coming from a seven year old.

By the time I reached middle school everyone and their momma memorized Tupac’s lyrics, I had to stop using them.  The demand for poems from my English teachers increased by 20%, I needed new talent and I needed it fast.  Luckily ‘Poetic Justice’ ensued and I was able to find new (unsigned) talent before I received my first poetry assignment.  One of my brother’s really good friends at the time LOVED to freestyle about everything and anything, he was REALLY talented and I felt that everyone, including my English teacher, should recognize his gift and natural ability to rhyme words while making sense!  I’d wait for him to come over to our house, give him a subject and then ask him to spit a few bars in slow motion so that I could write them down on my Hilary paper.

In highschool things got a little more difficult, my brothers friend wasn’t coming over to the house as much as before and there was no way for me to get a hold of him.  I needed talent that was easier to get in touch with and someone that would be around for all four years of highschool.  Thankfully, a friend that shall remain nameless showcased her love for poetry before my classes could begin.  She was so talented that I had to ruin all of her poems so that the teacher wouldn’t catch on to my scandal.  She was wrote 50% of all my required poems.  I got a B+ and that’s all I wanted, an A would’ve made me feel uncivilized.

Now that you’ve been warned, here’s the poem…the FIRST poem I’ve ever written in my life!  And it goes a little something like this…

Fatou - my brand new friend

She came out of nowhere

We share our secrets, I barely even know her

We laugh at the same things

It’s like she’s my sister

It’s too bad she’s leaving

I’m really gonna miss her.

She’s my brand new friend

We have no friendship bracelet

We have no friendship ring

We have no secret hand shake

We have no inside jokes

We haven’t exchanged clothes

We don’t talk the same

We don’t walk the same

We don’t share our friends

We barely know each others names!

I just met her last month at my parents house

It was Christmas Eve and the food was out

I don’t know her favorite food; my guess is African

I don’t know her favorite musician, is it Femi or Lauryn?

I don’t know her favorite color: it might be black and yellow

What I do know, is that she’s laughing right now.

She’s a real poet and we should all know it.

Roses are red

Violets are blue

Have fun in Sierra Leone

We’re all gonna miss you!

Finger snaps for Fatou!

Safe travels!
