The Perfect Lunchtime Read - Award Speeches
Hi Friends on Facebook and Friends in Life,
Welcome back to the work! I hope you survived the dreadful ‘Monday morning water-cooler chitchat’. If you were forced to listen to someone ramble about their weekend, they probably shared their thoughts with you on the Golden Globe Awards, the significant football games and the moody weather. Just in case you were wondering, I watched the Golden Globe Awards, caught a bit of the Jets vs. Patriots game and tried my best to stay out of the torrential rain.
Golden Globes:
I bet every last dollar of mine that everyone and their assistants, assistant will be sharing their thoughts on host, Ricky Gervais. Throughout the show comedian/actor, Ricky Gervais was fully loaded with entertainment for the whole family. If you’ve seen any of his TV shows or stand up specials, its no surprise that Mr. Gervais came out and unleashed on every celebrity with a notable problem. Whether or not you appreciated his categorical commentary throughout the program, you couldn’t help but watch and say ‘OH MY GOSH, NO HE DIDN’T!’ His relentless humor and PDA (public displays of alcoholism) was the heartbeat of the show. With no mercy in sight, he took shots at everyone including Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Junior, Tim Allen, Bruce Willis and the women of Sex and the City. Since I’m against repeating jokes, especially in writing, I recommend you scroll down and watch the clip of his opener that I posted on justdistracted.com.
Sidenote: Later on in the show Robert Downey Jr. spoke up against Ricky Gervais job as host saying, “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far”. ZIIIING!
This year the acceptance speeches were a major snooze fest! Can someone explain to me why no one had a speech prepared? It’s not like the nominees didn’t know that they might be accepting an award in front of millions of viewers until last night - they were all announced as nominees a month ago! Although the Golden Globe Awards is one of the largest televised award shows, there have been plenty of other award ceremonies leading up to the Globes where speeches could’ve been practiced. I’m not sure why my expectations are so bloody high when it comes to other people’s acceptance speeches. I guess I just find it hard to believe that none of the nominees in the entire room dreamt up that moment of winning a plastic trophy a few billion times in front of a mirror. Running to the podium, exclaiming that you don’t have a speech prepared, listing off a bunch of random names and then forgetting to thank your husband or wife is so passé. I don’t expect the best actor or director to do a stand up comedy routine and make me laugh. I just hope that they enjoy their moment and honor the people that helped them get there with dignity and pride.
This is the part where I write out what I would say if I won a Golden Globe…I have nothing.
Hasta manana! Today is the 3rd monday of the year, only 49 more this year, spend each one happier than the last :)
